Log file

Go to Glossary List

Description: A special file on a computer used to record activity. It can be used for statistical purposes, error tracking, or routine checks. Critical systems usually log large amounts of information that must be inspected if a security breach is suspected. Beware that intruders also check log files and try to erase traces of their activity (tools exist for this purpose). Besides, logging can use all free disk space in some cases, which leads to trouble.
